    Fitness boxing vs technical boxing

Fitness boxing classes use boxing movements (jab, cross, hook, slip) inside a circuit-style format with bags, pads and conditioning. They're great cardio and a low-commitment entry point. They generally won't teach you to actually box.

Technical boxing gyms — usually amateur or registered clubs — run real boxing training: footwork drills, pad work with experienced coaches, sparring, and the gradual build-up of skill that produces competent boxers. If you want to actually learn the craft, train at a technical gym.

    Your first boxing class

Hand wraps and a water bottle are all you need to bring (most gyms loan gloves for trials). Expect a warm-up, shadow boxing, pad rounds, bag rounds, and conditioning. Sparring is reserved for students with months of fundamentals.

    Boxing cost in Sydney

Boutique fitness boxing studios sit at $40–$60 per drop-in or $200–$300/month unlimited. Traditional boxing gyms are cheaper — often $25–$35 per session or $150–$220/month — but they expect commitment. Combat Pass covers both formats across Sydney under one membership.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is boxing safe for hobbyists?+

Pad work, bag work and technical drilling are safe. The risk in boxing comes almost entirely from sparring. Many hobbyist boxers train for years and never spar — perfectly valid.

Do I need to spar to get good?+

If you want to compete, yes. If you train for fitness and skill, no — controlled drilling and pad work can produce excellent technique without sparring.
